History & Mission
We have a rich history! Here is a brief summary...
- We are named for the Revolutionary War hero and early member of Congress, John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746-1807)
- Lutheran congregations are numerous in the Shenandoah Valley of VA.
- We have gathered for worship in 3 structures (wooden 1851, brick 1889 and stone 1952) all within a mile of one another continuing a strong commitment to downtown Harrisonburg.
- In the past 15 years Muhlenberg has more than doubled in baptized membership and worship attendance.
- In the past 10 years nearly $5 million in capital improvements and major expansions have been undertaken, including construction of an Activities Center to serve the community and a Gathering Area to welcome all.
- Our congregation is served by two senior pastors as well as a talented and dedicated staff and core of lay leaders.
- We have become recognized as a strong congregation with the hallmarks of rich and meaningful worship and music; a warm welcome to friends, family and visitors; and a passion for serving those in need - all for the sake of Christ!
OUR MISSION: "Open + Authentic + Relational + Serving" (We emphasize strong relationships, deep faith and effective outreach into the community....)
